2012 MMRC Field Trips -- Tentative

Saturday April 28th   Join MMRC as they travel to Arkona Ontario to dig in the fossil-rich Devonian formation of Hungry Hollow.  This 350 million year old exposure can yield many corals, crinoids, brachiopods and 3 species of trilobites. This rich site is world famous for its varied prehistoric fauna.

Saturday May 19th    Dig with the Experts. MMRC members will be traveling to Hamburg, New York to dig the trilobite-rich Devonian deposits of the Penn Dixie Quarry. You are guaranteed to find Phacops trilobites and if you do not find several, you just are not looking!

There is a nominal fee payable to Penn Dixie Quarry but you will receive membership to their club with rights to return later.

Saturday May 26th   MMRC Members will be traveling to the Wallace Quarry in Bayport, MI to search the deposits for fossils, minerals and crystals.  Also, see and collect glacial scrapings should you desire.

Hard hat, orange vest and wheel chocks are required. (MMRC will provide wheel chocks.)

Week before Independence Day  Bruce Baker will lead a multi-day trip to Michigan’s U.P.  Details are being developed; if you have suggestions contact Bruce by clicking HERE

Saturday and Sunday August 25-26   Great 2-day adventure searching several fossil  locations in the Alpena and Rogers City MI area.  At least 4 rich fossil sites will be visited. Devonian fish, Brachiopods and corals dominate the finds, though some trilobite material can also be found.

Sinkholes and other geological features will also be visited.  This could involve hiking 1.5 miles or more, depending on what we end up doing.  Our preliminary plan is to go to the Stevens Twin sinks and walk the narrow path between the two sinks (about 30 minutes).  Then we will go to Mystery Valley (about 3 miles from the sinks) and hike either or both:

1.) Earth crack trail (1 hr) and/or

2.) Path into the lake and to the swallow hole (1.5 hrs).  The lake that drains into the swallow hole will probably be dry in August, but the ground will be wet.

For those attending, Hotel discount information, meeting times and other activities will be provided.
